Sometimes dealers will have "free" service checkups once or twice a year on a particular day. Call around at your local dealers (there are plenty of them in MA) and see what they might have planned. Otherwise, my dealer charges one hour of labor (@ $80/hour) for a "safety inspection" where they will note anything leaking, broken, etc.
As for your statement, "if there is work to be done, they'll be charging GM anyway"... Well, just remember this. NOTHING is free, the customer ALWAYS pays in the end. Even that "free scheduled maintenance" that they have on new Saabs now results in a higher list price.
