The funny thing is that the stock component unit gives out 20Watts RMS per channel. This is enough to drive a tweeter in the dash AND a midrange/bass unit in the door. But you would have to fit a cross-over unit to seperate the tweeeter and mid/bass sound. Unfortunately, you'll get at least a 3dB loss of sound output due to losses in the cross-over. So that means only 10 Watts instead of 20 Watts hitting the speakers. That is not enough to satisfy the ears...
What should work, is a full range speaker in the door and a ceramic tweeter in the dash. The ceramic tweeters use a small resistor or capacitor as a cross-over. They can go quite loud with as little as 1 Watt! Motorola made a few good ones once upon a time.
One of the 1992-1994 Vauxhall cars had such a setup. But the amps kept blowing up, due to lack of sufficient heatsinks to channel away the heat dissipation. I suspect that the SAAB unit would also suffer from that. The stock unit has enough heatsink to dissipate the wasted drive power from the rear 9X6. But it would struggle if it had to drive an additional pair of large door speakers all by its own.
