I've always wanted to tackle routine tune-up items myself. Here's why . . . this is what $450 bought me last weekend for my 60K tune-up;
LOF
change brake fluid
change AT fluid
replace fuel filter
change engine coolant
replace serpentine belt
rotate tires
visually inspect a whole bunch of stuff
$150 in parts and $280 in labor. Granted, this is less than what the dealer wanted for the same service (went to an indie).
On a positive note, the indie noted that my plugs with 15K miles on them (NGK platinums) looked great and that my air filter was remarkably clean for 10K miles on it. Also, he asked me before just replacing the serpentine belt because it only had "four small cracks" in it (I had him change it anyway). The moral (as far as I'm concerned) is that 93 octance is worth it to keep the car running clean.
