Ive said before that saabs pricing policy hurts them.
First some people are put off by the MSRP they see on KBB or edmunds and never reach the showroom, because they are unaware of the big discounts available.
Second the big discounts new are obviously reflected in the lower resale price, so comparing msrp new to resale value 3 years down the line gives us the 'lousy saab resale value'. The reality is as noted by keith, comparable depreciation and a usefully lower price.
Third the constant rebates and leasing offers hurt the image of saab as a desirable product.
The only factor in support of the pricing structure is that saab wants to be seen as a competitor in the same market segments BMW,Mercedes etc occupy. (For magazine tests etc). But price spreads in such sectors are pretty large anyway, the history image and performance/handling/size of the cars is more a determinant of what sector they fall into.
The answer is to get real, cut the MSRP to a level where people will buy or lease at somewhere between that and invoice. Seems like the new 9-3 SS pricing is an attempt to do that.
