Unfortunately, the 5-speed in the 9-5 is not very impressive. The throws are a little long and the throttle response is a little slow. I personally prefer the automatic in the 9-5 mostly because of the throttle response. I believe Saab has designed the slower throttle response in the manual because of its use on slippery roads in Sweden.
On a different note, I drove a new 9-3 Sport Sedan earlier this week and I was amazed how much better the shifter was in the new car. It had short, quick throws and very precise engagement. Unfortunately it was only the 5-speed/175 hp so I don't know how the 6-speed will be, but everyone I've talked to says it's as good or better than the 5-speed. And I was surprised by how many people in our group commented on how good the shifter was. And many of these people don't ususally drive a manual so they were pretty unbiased.
I was also surprised by how good the 175 hp engine is. I didn't expect much but I was surprised by how quick it felt. The car overall was very impressive.
