I agree. It just does not seem that Mobil 1 @ 3,000 miles is anything but overkill.
Seems to me that the owner of this motor was on dino oil and possibbly ran it dry. (The person at the gas station we've all seen putting 4 quarts in the filler tube ). The damage was irreversible, so they just kept on driving it.
But, SAAB professed that dino oil 10W-30 with the starburst API symbol was the approved lubrication for this particular model year. I believe the prescribed intervals at that time were 7,500 miles. Our local dealership cringed at that. I remember cars with 20,000 miles draining out blobs in the '95, '96 '97 model yrs. Yuck!
I drove a SAAB 900 1983, not a mis-print, a 1983, on SF/CC oils to 250,000 miles, and it never burned 1/2 quart in 5,000 miles. ( Ever heard of Valvoline Turbo V oil ?) Anyway, such is the engine metallurgy of a properly maintained SAAB.
I wrote you on the BB before of SAAB's opinion that premature wear of timing chains and balance shafts was the result of poor motor oil and/or oil change neglect. I hope you see more support for this position with this post.
