A 'calibrated' boost guage will provide some numbers. You cannot get such from the in-dash boost indicator. With a boost guage, you really don't know how accurate the readings are in absolute terms. But they are repeatable and you can note small changes and better evaluate how the boost tapers off, or not, at high RPM's.
I mounted mine on the top of the dash, right beside the 'A' pillar where the guage is quicker to the eye. The only thing that I regret is that guages with glass covers are too reflective. They really need an optical coating of some sort. With an interior that is in shadows or dark, the surface relection can be quite unwanted.
A boost guage is not really useful unless you are doing mods where you will be changing boost. With a basic MBC mod, a guage is really not needed and will not effect how you adjust it. But it might show you how much boost droop there is and provide some feedback if you were to try different MBC pressure tap points to lessen that droop.
Most boost guages also are vacuum guages as well. But with a diesel engine, you want a boost only guage, becuase diesels don't have throttles and don't have manifold vacuums.
