I was lucky enough to be invited to participate in a pre-launch presentation and test drive on the 7th. September.
I got to drive 2.0t 175 PS with 5-speed manual
2.0t 175 PS with 5-speed automatic
2.2TiD 125 PS with 5-speed manual
I did not try the 1.8t 150 PS and the Aero 210 PS is not yet available.
My impressions in short:
design is a bit non descript and gets lost in the crowd. Chassis and handling is superb. 5-speed manual gearbox is sweet. 5-speed automatic is good if you like driving an automatic, I found the manual function better than that in an Audi A6 I drove recently.
Quality on the whole is good minus points for:
- the plastic trim in the front footwells, my 900 Gen. II has carpet on the sidewalls which I think is far better.
- The trim on the trunk sill is very susceptable to scratching. I would definitely recommend buying the load blanket/sill and bumper protection which Saab offer as an accessory.
- The folding of the rear seats is very simple in all respects and in my opinion very unsatisfactory.
- The driving position and front seats are as always superb the dash layout I found excellent although as another person pointed out the night panel button is too small and hidden away.
- I and I think most real Saab owners will wait for the wagon version ar even the SUV/Crossover model. I hope both or one of these models will be available with the 3.0 V6 Diesel engine currently used in the 9-5.
