Common CD changers you get at the local stereo outlet play on an FM radio station and are compatible with any car with an FM radio. They come with a remote to operate them. There is some degradation of quality because they play on a radio station.
The Saab factory CD changer is hard wired into the factory Saab unit as an auxilary input directly, no FM radio station involved. It's controlled by the actual Saab head unit in the dash and on the steering wheel in a 9-3.
The Jetta unit might be a common aftermarket unit, FM modulated, that plays on a radio station, or it could be a factory unit like a Saab.
