Front Brake Clunk Noise

Hi,
I have a brake clunk noise coming from the front right caliper. This noise started during a hard braking manuver in reverse. This is not related to the suspension clunking issue as it happens when going straight and only under hard braking, both reverse and forward.
My untested theory is that the pad (OEM and the caliper has never been removed, to my knowledge, from the factory) is shifting in the caliper, as it is a one time hard clunk that is audible, but not felt, with the top and windows up. I am assuming that the caliper is fix longitudally and is probably not making the noise since not movement can be seen or fresh surfaces exposed in the every growing layer of brake dust.
Has anyone else had this problem? A fellow co-worker has this problem also with his 1-month old Viggen Conv. His happens during much lighter braking and much more often, say parklot maneuvers. The dealer resolution is simply to replace the caliper, but I am curious about the root cause.
My SAAB is an 01 Conv, prem pkg, 205/55R16's, 20k miles, 10 months old, manual tranny.
thanks for your help,
tony
