On Star uses a very old analog cellular phone as it's brains, so don't expect the kind of performance you can get out of the newer digital phones and service. I think it's a waste of money, though the "safety" package ($199/year I think) is probably not a bad idea. If you look on their site they claim in their FAQ that they use analog because it is more widely supported. This is bunk IMO since the entire nation has gone digital due to the improved clarity and reduced power usage. Sure there's places that digital is out of range, but as you've experienced analog has it's own issues. If On Star was digital, and included a mobile phone that you could carry on your person, it might be a viable alternative to my digital phone, but alas it is severely lacking as is.
If you want phone in your car, get the Nokia kit installed and get a Nokia phone to go with it. Works perfectly with the SAAB audio unit.
