I have practiced this for years with good results. The amount of black road grime is always impressive. This gets into the internals of the antenna.
So this summer, I was cleaning the antenna more frequently and it exibitted a lingering tighness. So I oiled it, ran it up and down a few times then wiped off all that I could, running it up and down a few times while wiping. So that really made a big difference. So my advice is to keep the antenna as oil free as possible, and oil as a last resort when cleaning with windex does not yield an improvement. I guess that after years of windex, that the internals can get bone dry from a lubrication point of view. ( I used Delvac 1 to oil it, now my antenna gets 6% better mpgs :)
The main point, is to avoid oil for routine antenna maintenance, because the oil attracts and binds the road grim and tire dust. This gets into the inside of the segments and becomes an abrasive gummy mess which causes binding and friction.
Nice to have you back TG
