I am relatively new to this board. I have returned to SAAB, after years of my '89 SPG (my ex wife got it in the divorce... ) and I am grateful for this resource. It vastly increases my pleasure of SAAB ownership.
I have spent years on a Fiat related site.. As you could guess, we need all the help we can get keeping those on the road, with parts beginning to disappear and whole cars being crushed at the salvage yards due to lack of interest... The conferencing software is a little different.. and of course the types of cars are different...but many of the needs are the same, in that we are all looking to enjoy our cars as enthusiasts, and as consumers of good technology.
I wanted to make a couple of observations...
At the Fiat site..(I would post a link but it seems to get me in trouble here, search google for "Mirafiori") we have taken the best advice on a popular topic and we have archived it to an articles page. Those with specific knowledge (Wow, thanks Dean...) have written articles and posted diagrams on the popular topics that get rehashed again and again. There is a Spider suspension link, with articles on ball joints, bushings brakes etc... Everyone is encouraged to post their best.. and then requests for more data are simply referred there. If there are new questions that come up, the crowd on the forum is then happy to entertain the new questions...Believe me.. we have all had the "how do I purge the cooling system of air" question a thousand times.. it happens.. It's part of welcoming newbies into the "discipline".
The second thing is that to post on mirafiori, one needs to have a registered username and password. This eliminates anonymous posting. It also provides for automatic signatures etc. I understand that is a function of the software in use.. but it eliminates any anonymity. We still get folks registering fake names.. and then stirring the pot, but generally the group over there shrugs it off easily.
Just a couple of thoughts.. these problems seem to be standard, no matter what kind of car you care about...
What would you all think of starting a knowledge archive then? I have looked through the features at the bottom.. could we add to the FAQ's?
