If the 'tapping' occurs at idle, its not knock (read that out loud, it was not meant to be a knock knock joke!).
You could have a sticking lifter or valve (I had this once, using Castrol Faketec(tm). You probably don't know what oil has been used etc.
Faced with this unknown, I would use a 1 quart engine flush, following the directions fully, then run Mobil 1 10W30. For higher miles, I would seek a xxW40 'true' synthetic. If there is a noticeable oil consumption that is not a leak, then I would use a chemical treatement that claims to free sticking rings and valves, one week before the flush and change.
The Mobil One and engine flush will take care of and sticking caused by deposits.
I would also use a bottle of Techron Cocnentrate, perhaps two conseq treated tanks.
It is helpful if you state your year and miles etc.
If there was a damage to the hoses that connect to the BPC or the actuator diaphragm, then there would be over boost, not under boost. So the problem is not there. The outer most hose on the BPC goes to the actuator. I don't know how things would go if the two hoses were mixed up.
Check the turbo hoses from the turbocompressor to the intercooler IC, and from the IC to the throttle body TB. Check for damage, improper fit or loosness. You could have a major leak. That would be consistant with what you report. There are two hoses, around 3/4" ID to and fro the idle air control valve at the TB.
Remove the grill and give the IC a looking over. And damage to the end tanks? The end tank crimps look ok?
