>I STILL DON'T believe the hype about Saab owners being neutral over the hatch issue...
Well, as you've just demonstrated, the "old Saab" owners are very much in favor of hatchbacks. The only problem is there's not enough of you to make it a worthwhile business plan... but we've been over this many, many times before (and yes, I know about the Mercedes hatchback, and when you think of it, it's just a entry level "niche" vehicle in their massive lineup).
Basically, if Saab had followed Audi's playbook (which they are now doing) and come out with an ALL-sedan lineup in 1994, they'd be in much better shape. The A4 was only available as a four-door SEDAN for years... There were no A4 coupes, no convertibles, certainly no hatchbacks, and the wagon came out a couple of years later. And now that they've increased their sales figures (surpassing Saab) a convertible is available now.
THAT is the formula for success... Build what the people want (aka four door sedans) and then follow it up with the niche vehicles later.
