Try "S" on shifter, nothing to repair...... You'll need to engage it everytime you shift into drive. It won't default. You'll see the "SPORT" icon on the dash near the shift quadrant display. This will give you higher r.p.m. upshifts and downshifts will be intiated with much less throttle input, just what you're looking for, and I think a more aggressive motorized throttle response.
I always drive my 96 900SE in sport. I know without looking because with a given amount of throttle I don't get a downshift until I push the "S" button on the shifter. Some folks have even reported better gas mileage!
Makes a big difference in my enjoyment of an automatic.
