The original popping could easily have been a loose strut. My old Nissan SE-R suffered from this anomaly on a continual basis after installing the new inserts.
Beyond that the current crunch that dissipates after some driving sounds like the normal cold weather noise many 9-3/900 owners report from the suspension. Do a quick search in here or the 900 board and you'll find it's a pretty heavy topic of discussion. There were a few that reported successful fixes when the dealer followed a particular TSB to the letter, more reported only limited success from the threads I remember reading.
