I got some feedback from TireRack on how to properly assess the wear on my P6000 Sport Veloce tires. It turns out that relatively shallow channel in the middle of the tread is the place to measure, even though there are deeper channels elsewhere on the tire. The middle channel has the treadwear indicators.

Anyhow, so my rear tires are at about 4/32" of remaining tread. The front ones are at about 5/32" of remaining tread. When new, the spec says they were 10/32" deep. The legal "worn" limit (implied by Pirelli warranty) is 2/32". Therefore I beleive my rears are 6/8 = 75% worn, and my fronts are 5/8 = 62.5% worn. But they're scary. They give up pretty easily in the dry (like they squeal when I take a normal city corner), and seem better in the wet, but still plenty scary. Last night I had an interesting experience with oversteer and activation of TCS that I'd like not to repeat.

The mileage warranty on these tires is 40k! The car has almost exactly 15k miles on it, at least half of which are freeway cruising. This seems pretty ridiculous to me. But I've got several major problems with claiming any sort of warranty coverage:

1) I didn't buy the car new. I bought it Saab certified used at 5k. I had a rotation (probably the car's first one, at 11k). So I can't document a rotation history for the life of the car.

2) The tires aren't 100% worn. Usually don't you have to wear them all the way down to legal limit before you can claim warranty coverage?

It seems like there's something I should be able to do here, besides shell out full price on new tires. I shouldn't have to compromise safety. Clearly these tires are not safe all the way down to the legal wear limit. A 40k tire should have an effective safe life of much longer than 15k, provided it's not being raced (which it never has been). I kept Saab recommended pressures in them (32 or 31, I don't recall which) up until recently, when I increased to 36.

Any advice?

Thanks folks,
