Went back to dealer this morning and sat in it. Very comfortable and very well laid out. The excellent seat actually backs farther than our 9-5's, but the general quality of the materials is not inviting, to say the lease. I never thought they could come up with cheaper-feeling steering wheel stalks than the 9-5s, but they surpassed themselves. A positive detail is that the fold out butterfly cup holder swings out to the side of the SID, so it should not spill into the controls in an emergency stop or a small hit, as in the 9-5.
Initially, I thought I could excuse the choice of materials for a base model, probably comparable to its competitors, but the salesman hit me like a cold shower when he told me this particular model, with Launch package, bi-xenon’s and sports suspension, was going for 42, 000$ (CND). The 2002 9-5 Linear automatic with leather and sunroof is presently going for 39,900$ (CND). Besides being a bigger car, a base 9-5 comes standard with 16 in. wheels, remote mirrors, power seats with memory for driver, ACC… that are all options on the 9-3.
I reserve my judgement until I drive the 9-3 because I know they put a lot into the chassis and drive train, which, in my opinion, is more important than the apparent quality of vinyls and plastics, but the 9-5 seems more car for the money at this point.
