Hey JD,
Long time no see! Anyway, I recently got an '01 9-3SE, 5spd hatchback, and have been very happy with it. I haven't run into any mechanical or build quality issues as of yet <knock on wood>, but only time will tell how they'll hold up compared to the C900.
I think the 9-3 has a lot of what I love about the C900, and actually improves upon it. Seats are great. Power is much improved (all 9-3s are turbos, by the way, and in 2002 they're all high output turbos). Visibility is better in my sedan C900 vs. my hatchback 9-3, but I think that's more of a hatch thing than a 9-3 thing. The car feels more insulated to me vs. the C900. That's good in that it's smoother and even more comfy to cruise around in...bad in that I think some of the road feel, and sense of the engine is lost.
5spd is better than the one in my 900 (shorter throw, a little less notchy), but it's still not great. Doors still shut with a nice THUD compared to most other cars. Feels and looks nicer than my C900, but again, the 9-3 is new, and I never drove a new C900, so only time will tell.
The fact that I don't have a lot to say on the issue says something in itself!
