Hi Kevin,

I just put my snow tires on last week - so this morning I did a similar retorquing ritual. Assuming the studs are not super loose - there is no need to jack -up the car. Just snug them down with your torque wrench in a star pattern - ie tighten the bolts that are essentially opposite one another (I know that's technically impossible on a five-lug wheel) - this prevents any chance of warping. I know that I generated controvery over on the 9-3 page, but I torque my wheels studs to 65-70 ft/lbs. Others have used more (80-90 ft/lbs). You can check the Tire Rack site for torque ranges. I have had very good results with that torque - nearly 800,000 miles on 11 cars with alloy wheels - never a loose wheel or stretched stud (no pun intended). I have, however, on two occasions had garage mechanics overtighten lug nuts on my 4x4's to the point that they stretched and snapped under load (talk about needing a new change of shorts! - let alone strtching your stud!). New studs had to be pressed into the wheel flange (trucks: 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser, 1979 International Scout II)

Sorry - that was not meant to frighten you - its just the fact that if you drive enough cars long enough - rare events happen. The Sout was terrically preapred for off-road adventures... however, my poor mother borrowed the car one day to do errands and manged to twist the driveshaft off in a K-Mart parking lot due to a posi-traction malfunction (or so she says - I assume she was doing burnouts for the boys in the lot).

Cheers to torque
Eric
