I have a 1999 9-3S and have a Hirsch ECU upgrade. I love it and see it as the best way to go for upgrading your car's power, although the cost of an mbc can make it a quite appealing option as well. Hirsch is quite expensive so they do not appeal to most people on this board. Numerous other people on this board have had success with the numerous other tuners as well. So far, there haven't been any reports of problems due to ECU upgrades. You'll have to do some research to pick what may be best for your situation. I picked Hirsch due to my location and the fact that I could get the ECU custom programmed at their shop. Other tuners iclude, SQR, Maptun, Abbott, Nordic and some others. You can use the search engine to look up some more info. Remember to check the performance board as well.
Have fun!
