As promised a review of my testdrive of 9-3SS Posted by Paul [Email] (#792) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Paul) on Sat, 16 Nov 2002 21:26:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Drove a BEAUTIFULLY appointed 9-3SS in Steel Grey -my new favorite colour- that had 17inch wheels and sports suspension today with five-speed Sentronic auto transmission. My initial observations......
1) No more cheap sounding door locks
2) Totally different driving position in that you sit low in this car unlike every previous Saab I have driven.
3) Turbo lag non existent (more on this later)
4) Absolutely no body roll with the sport suspension. The cars ride is firm but is in no way uncomfortable.
5) SUPER RESPONSIVE steering and handling!
6) Very quiet engine
7) Sentronic transmission is a blast when you shift yourself but I can see why some folks say they would want the 210bhp engine as the base car doesnt "feel" that fast with this transmission. Id have a stick shift anyway!
This car will in no doubt bring Saab into a totally new era as this car is FANTASTIC!!! Coming off of the highway the body has no lean at all and you can really keep the power up whereas a NG900 and even a 9-5 would feel like its about to tip over. At this point I must stress I have yet to drive a 9-5 Aero which I understand handles beautifully. The steering is in no way wooden, it responds to driver input IMMEDIATELY. The engine is super refined and has no lag, in fact it doesnt really feel like a turbocharged engine. The only way you know its a turbo is by looking at what the turbo boost gauge is doing which, IMHO, is a tiny bit disappointing as I love that "boot up the ass feeling" you used to get when you hammered the gas! Its not that this car doesnt have get up and go, dont get me wrong, its just soooo refined. The car did get a few looks from passing cars who slowed down to get a better peak. Metallic Steel Grey paint work shows off the cars lines beautifully but Silver is the classic Saab colour so it'd be a hard choice. BTW the trunk is HUGE. Now all I have to do is save my pennies! Drive this car guys and gals, its a beauty and this is a true Sport Sedan!!!
