Jim said it right for the head gasket. As for the heater controls, if the temp knob gets stiff, you will need a new design control panel with a different cable, it is about $165 for the part. If the distribution knob gets tight, you are looking at about a $700 fix out of warranty. On first complaint, the dealer is to lube the distribution box and give you the car back. This is only a temp fix and you will have problems later. The only real fix is a new design distribution box. I am in the middle of replacing mine on my own since my dealer screwed me with the lube thing and Saab of Germany won't help me out for the box replacement. I got the box for $120 but the dealer here wnated $180. It is a 7 hours of labor job, so you can see how the total would reach $700 really quick. I worked for 5 hours today and all that I have left is to finish putting the dash together. Good luck getting them to fix this problem unless you do have stiff controls.
