Do you have a T5 car? The little orange shift light in my 1999 SE is now, as they say, "sleeping with the fishes". And you can tell the EPA that my mileage has not changed...

Here's a copy of my reply to a similar request, in case you can't get your technician to see things your way:

It was not difficult, although I went a bit overkill at first, removing the whole glove compartment. I'm sure that was unnecessary, but it did afford me a better view. With the glove-box component, the whole project took about 1/2 hour from disassembly to re-assembly. It was cold out, but this process does have to be done with your lower body hanging out of the passenger door, and some contortions are needed to read the ECU harness numbers. If I did it again, foregoing the extra steps, it would take less than 10 minutes.

Some good pictures of the general area can be found at:
http://www.speedparts.se/arkiv/anvisningar/box/box93.htm

All you need to do is grab a properly sized torx driver (the one opposite the flat-head screwdriver in the toolkit), a 10 (?)mm wrench, a light, and some wire snippers. I disconnected the battery as well.

remove the 10 mm bolt securing the bottom right-hand trim/carpet.

pull the carpet away from the footwell, exposing the ECU tucked into the right side below the glove box. Be careful not to pop the door-sill trim off like I did: it was a pain to seat again.

remove the torx bolt holding the near-end of the ECU if you want to remove the whole thing for easier manipulation. The far end is only held by a spring clip, and slides right out.

The wiring-harness connector has a hinged locking mechanism: pull on its distal end firmly to lever it free (see picture on web site).

Looking at the disconnected side of the wiring harness with a flashlight, you will see that all the sockets are numbered. #55 (yellow/blue wire) powers the shift light: it is in the bottom row of wires.

I snipped the wire somewhat far up (to facilitate emergency splicing), and taped the exposed ends. Re-assembly was fast and easy, and I have noticed no effects other than the lack of a shift light.

Good luck!
