Hi all,

I finished my big project a few days ago. As some of you may know, my
1999 9-3 suffered from the stiff climate control knob problem. The
dealer here screwed me by lubeing the distro box a few times and by
the time we figured that the box needed to be changed, my car was
out of warranty and Saab of Germany would not pay up, or even
promise a good will return of payment to me if I paid a dealership
to change it.

The price for the box is $180 at the dealer in Germany. I was able
to locate the same part online for $120 plus shipping. I decided I
did not want to pay the dealer for 7 hours of labor without
gaurantee that I would get reimbursed. So, I decided to try and
tackle the big job myself. Due to the box being deep inside the
dash area, much work was needed to get it out. The entire dash
board and its structural supports need to be removed and the
windshield wipers and cowl also. This allowed the cabin air filter
to be moved so that the fan assembly that sits on the distribution
box can be removed.

It took a friend and I about 4 hours to get the box removed and
about another 1 1/2 hours to get the primary large part of the dash
reinstalled. Then on tuesday morning, it took me another 5 hours to
put everything back into the dash including the steering wheel,
switches and such. So, in total, it took me about 10 1/2 hours todo
the job that the dealer would have charged about $500 for. I also
know my way around underneath the dash quite well now!

The new box design appearsidentical to the old one but it works much
better. The effort required to change settings is now greatly
reduced. Hopefully, my days of breaking the stupid white plastic
toilet paper dowel pin excuse for a linkage are over!

Just thought you would all like to know. Sorry about the long
post. If anybody wants more info just let me know.

Have fun!

Eric Burr
