Turning rotors is passe. The contruction of modern rotors is composite, meaning a steel hub with an iron disk.
This type of rotor is very suseptable to warping. Several things can happen to a turned rotor. Out of the box a rotor may appear warped, but when clamped with lug nut pressure, the disk is trued. The turning lathe often does not have enough clamping force to accomplish this. The surface roughness after turning is often not fine enough, thus the first few uses of the rotor will overheat them causing an actual warp (very common).
Rotors are being made thinner today to create less rotating mass and unsprung weight. Both of which are highly prised in the performance of the car, at little sacrifice. I believe the ceramic composite rotors on the new 911 GT2 save 22lbs. I am not sure if that is per axle or total. I know rotors don't weigh 11lb ea, but other components can be made lighter if the rotors are lighter.
Just some thoughts. I don't think SAAB missed the mark, except for maybe spec'ing to abrasive of a pad.
later,
tony
