Infant Seat in 9-3-very little room?

Hello-
Just changed from the newborn seat to the larger infant seat (Britax Roundabout) and am surprised at how much room the seat takes up in the back. Only option I have is to put it in the middle and move my seat back forward of my normal driving position. To put the infant seat behind either front seat requires the front seat to be all the way forward. Is this common, or am I using a seat that is not optimal for the car?
Thanks-
SR
