A turning movement is not necessary to induce spin as one becomes a spectator riding on a four wheeled hockey puck -- just hitting the brakes in a straight line can do it for you. Do you want to depend on the electronic anti-lock system to try to make the rear tires into something they are not in terms of available grip to keep you stable? Even anti-lock requires that the wheels have grip, and once the car is rotating one can forget that system. I travel the Rochester, Buffalo, Ithaca roads all the time, and I have learned the hard way that unstable braking results from cheaping out on just two snows and is just not worth it. Low profile sports would be even worse than ordinary "all season" performance tires since it is highly unlikely that they have either an adequate tread for snow or ice nor a rubber compound that can deal with cold temperatures. Most performance tires are only good for adhesion in warmer temps. Just my two cents.
