I'd probably vote auto, though I don't have any hard data to back me up.
The auto is made by Aisan-Warner (sp?), who also does Toyota/Lexus auto trannies. The manual I understand is still a Swedish built Saab-specific gearbox (though I could be wrong here). If long term reliability was my exclusive concern, I think I'd go with Toyota vs. Saab when it comes to gearboxes. Of course if/when it breaks, the auto might cost more to fix than the manual.
If that logic doesn't convince you, how 'bout this? If any part of your auto tranny dies in the warranty period, it's covered. With a 5spd, if you lose the clutch (most likely failure during warranty), it's on you.
That said, you still couldn't convince me to buy an auto over a 5spd, having driven both. The fun factor simply isn't there. I haven't driven the "tiptronic" 5spd autos yet, but I still don't think it would give me the same pleasure as the good ol' manual. Then again, I rarely drive in heavy nasty stop and go traffic. If I did......
Now, when Saab introduces an electronically controlled "automatic" manual, ala Ferrari, I'll take a closer look at giving up my clutch pedal.
Cheers,
