Yeah, I sat in one at the dealer the other day. No one was around so I got to poke and prod as much as I wanted ;-)
I understand where they are coming from when they say the plastics are not high-quality. The top of the dash, the pebbley plastic, is HARD, although it does have some give if you push on it. Contrast this to "higher quality" dashes where the plastic is softer to the touch and is more padded. My '86 Z has a nicer dash than this car :-\ (Then again, it cost $21k new...)
The remainder of the plastics (like those going down the sides of the "tranny tunnel" and on the inside of the b-pillar) are rock hard, like the dash of the new Altima (lowest-rent interior ever goes to -that- car.)
Given that, the design of the interior is quite nice. I just wish, as someone here noted long ago, that they'd put a little more money into the quality of the plastics and left leather off the base model. As it is, the higher models have to pay the price of a cheap interior. And I'd be hard pressed to pay $30+k for an interior that's bested by a Jetta.
This is not to detract from the car's other fine points; I'm only ragging on the plastics! :-D
