manual transmission whine when cold

I bought my first Saab, an '01 Viggen, last spring, and have been loving it. I've also really enjoyed surfing around this site as I get to know my car, and this board is a great resource.
My question is this: With the arrival of some pretty cold weather here in Boston, I've noticed a slight whine that seems to be coming from the transmission when the car is very cold. Transmission shifts fine, and the whine goes away pretty quickly as the car warms up. Obviously the gear oil is cold, but is this type of light whine normal in a 9-3 transmission when cold? Would a different type of transmission oil, perhaps Redline, get rid of the noise? I've found a couple short posts referring to this noise, but am unclear about whether I need to have it checked out.
Thanks in advance. Again, great site.
