You say "I'm no engineer and I'm sure there's techies here that can explain/expand on what I present" so here goes...
Well, an out-of-balance condition doesn't have to vibrate ALL the time. In the example of the famous inner drivers, they just get sloppy as they wear. When you load them (by burying your right foot) they take up their sloppyness in a way that's not perfectly centered.
I'd start with the plugs, just because they're pretty cheap & easy. Look for inner drivers or CV joints after you're convinced that the easy stuff didn't work. New spark plugs are a normal maintenance thing anyway, so you won't really be wasting your money there.
