I am the driver of the car that Joel refers to above that died at the intersection. I had been driving for about 15 miles from when I started the car. The car was performing normally, with no unusual noises and no warning lights coming on. I came to a stop, and moved the car to neutral. It died without warning. The engine would turn over, but it would not start. It seemed like it was TRYING to start, but after sputtering a few times it died. This happened several times over about five minutes, at which point I called Saab roadside.
There were no warning signs that day or any day previous that something may have been wrong.
I agree that a non-functioning fuel pump is a reasonable diagnosis, however, intuitively it seems wrong that it would have happened after the car was running normally for 25-30 minutes. I would have expected a fuel pump problem to have occurred closer to the time the car was started.
