Cool story...
I have a big garage in Massachusetts - so it gets cold and small mammals are fond of the indoor niches to hide. I foolishly left bird seen out in piles so that the mice, chipmonks, meadow voles, etc. would become accustomed to our presence. My youngest step-daughter and I had great fun hanging-out and watching the criters come and go...
Well, the upshot of this debacle is their affinity for warm cars - for quite some time we have been removing all sorts of nests from under the hood of our cars. we have an SUV that sits for days at a time unused and the airbox is a favorite. One time, I did not have the heart to remove the baby mice and waited a few days until they were larger. I fitted a mesh screen to the airbox entrance. So far, none have found their way into my '02 Aero...
I have since stopped my indoor feeding rituals ans instead overstock the yard with edible stuff. I don't feed the coyotes though as they have become a little too tame and start to hang-out on the deck. Our lab studies coyotes using radiotelemetry and we have raised hand-reared captive pups bound for zoo exhibits and from my experience - taming of coyotes leads to a variety of problems - living in a Saab airbox excluded, of course!
Best,
Eric
