Unfortunately, my Saab friend, this is a problem. I broke the same knob while I was test driving my current Saab. I bought it with the assurance that if would be fixed. When I pick up the car, the knob was sticky. I later found out they only temp fixed it. I took it back and they had to disassemble the dash and replaced the whole heater core assembly (which is somehow the culprit of the defective selector knob). I got it down under warranty, thank goodness. I know of one person on this site that fixed it himself (cause its such an expensive job). But I don't recall his name. Try searching under Air Flow Selector Knob and such to track him down. He might have the best advise for a DIY job. Otherwise you have to take it to a dealer or a good mechanic.
Good Luck.
