Remember that what's important is wheel torque, not crankshaft torque. Wheel torque is crankshaft torque multiplied by gear ratio.

Even though the crank torque drops off at higher revs, you generally still have more torque at the wheels than if you shifted to the next gear, due to the higher gear ratio in the lower gear.

For max acceleration, you want to take it to the redline prior to every shift, except perhaps in the 4-5 shift, where the ratios are closer. (I don't have a torque curve in front of me to confirm this).

The other exception I can think of is where the electronic torque limiters interfere. Again, I don't have numbers in front of me, but it's conceivably possible that if your torque was electronically limited enough in 1st gear, for example, as it is in the 9-3, that you could get more torque by shifting before 6k to 2nd, where the crank torque limitation was higher.

I don't have a good answer for the initial question, however :-( Some say these Saab engines like to be revved high, but common sense would dictate that doing so on a regular basis probably wouldn't be great for the engine. Neither is always revving it low. To me, the natural choice is somewhere in between.

I wouldn't worry about rapping it out periodically, provided that you are good about your maintenance, confident/safe in your driving, and sure that your engine is good and warm before you do it.
