I recommend using a good flush, such as made by AMSOIL or BG. If you don't, or won't, the synthetic will clean (especially if it is a good POA base oil). In that case, watch for any sign of sudden increase in oil consumption. If you get that after a couple thousand miles, change the filter and top off. If the oil gets really nasty looking, then change the first batch after 4-5,000 miles.
Having said that, my 88 9000T was purchased at 87,000 miles. Have no idea what oil the former owner used, but the shop put AMSOIL in it before I even decided to buy it. Ran it the first year (10K), changed filter at 5,000. Everything fine.
