Yet another 9-3SS test Posted by AdamB [Email] (#3) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AdamB) on Fri, 3 Jan 2003 09:59:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just read a compare of the 9-3SS 1.8T Linear (150hp and the cheapest base model) with BMW 320i, Audi A4 1.8T, Volvo S60 2.4 and Skoda Superb 1.8T in a danish car mag. They really liked the handling of the 9-3SS and said it was better than all others except the 320i. The BMW got the same amount of points for handling. However they didn't like the cheap interior of the 9-3SS and they said the engine was weak compared with the others. End result was the A4 won the test, the 320i came second and the 9-3SS third.
Now I'm pretty puzzled by this test, since the 9-3SS was the second cheapest car in the test. They even mentioned that Saab offered a 25 hp upgrade for the 150hp engine for much less money that the price difference between the tested models. But for some reason that didn't come into consideration when they gave the points. That the 320i had a crappy interior too, and didn't even have rear electric windows, also didn't change the fact that it got more points for interior.
The S60's engine got 4/5 points vs the 9-3SS' 2/5 points just because they liked the sound of it! WTF is up with that? Twice as many points for performance when it wasn't faster or more fuel efficient, but because it sounded better. It didn't even have a turbo, whereas the 9-3SS can easily be upgraded to 210+ hp with a simple software change. Why are all motor journalists such morons?
Needless to say the 320i got the most points for it's engine: 5/5
