K&N air filter review and question

For christmas I ask for and received a K&N air filter (part 33-2166 from
http://www.performanceintl.com). This was for my 1999 9-3 base.
I must agree with others that posted... I can't say there is any power increase (I have stock exchaust) but there is definitely less turbo lag. The acceleration feels more smooth. My gas mileage seems a tad better also
(29 mpg ..with snow tires).
What I did notice when I install the filter was that the air tube (snorkel)
going into the box from behind the head light does end at the box..it keeps
going inside the box almost to the back! A search on the NG900 board
indicates this may create some kind of sound filter? Can this tube be
cut where it comes into the box so the air fills the box? Does the longer
tube help keep the air cooler? It seems strange but I don't want to second
guess the design.
