Front pads for 99 9-3 did not fit

It was time for brakes (70K miles) so I ordered pads and rotors from SaabPartsDirect but found that the front pads that were sent to me did not fit. There was a little extra rounded bump (4mm or so) on either side of the outside front pad backings. The pads that I removed did not have this. Other than that, they were the same. The little bump kept from from fitting inside the calipers.
I called SaabPartsDirect and they say that these are the pads that are meant to fit on the car. Did the pads and calipers change some time in 99? Mine was built in March of 98.
I got around this by grinding the pad backing down to match the originals, priming them, and making sure to use anti-sieze grease where they slide inside the caliper. It sounds scary but it was a rather simple operation.
The car stops great now but I'm very curious. I have another friend who is about to put brakes on his 99 9-3 so I'd like to know the real deal here. I'd hate for him to run into the same problem.
ps. Thanks to Dean for posting his brake instructions. The rears were very easy which was nice.
