The kit needs to be set up with some fun, special wiring gimmicks to actually get it putting out sound through the radio. It sounds like this was not done. Most people don't even do this step (they just plug in the external speaker for the kit), so it isn't surprising.
The microphone probably actually does work, but depending on where its mounted, it may be picking up a lot of road noise, especially at highway speed. The default location, tucked in the center headliner area with the lamp switches, seems to create a "chamber of echoes". I know other folks have mounted the mic nearer to the steering wheel or pillar. Can't comment on their success.
I took my kit out because it was too frustrating, listening to people complain about how they couldn't hear me very well when i was on the highway. Plus, my Nokia just plain sucked anyway!
