The new book "High and Mighty: The World's Most Dangerous Vehicles and how the got that way" by Keith Bradsher of the New York Times reviews the history, safety, politics, and marketing of the SUV. It's a great read. Some facts from memory: the death rate is 6-8% higher in mid and large size SUVs over a midsize car. In a side-impact collision, you're 6x more likely to kill the driver of the car getting hit in the side than die yourself. If you're driving an SUV that figure is 30x!
Add the cruddy safety to what marketers say about SUV owners - that the tend to be self-centered, arrogant, etc., and seriously, why would you want one?
The book is great, but this book review in the Washington Monthly sums up a lot of what the author discovered if you don't care to tear through 400 pages.
