I was thinking about the chatter on air filter elements and cone filters that has zipped across SAABNET in the past few weeks. Once the smoke cleared I was left with a couple of thoughts.
Has anybody checked the actual temperature difference in the two setups to find the variance in heat load? I will do this myself once warmer temps roll around but wondered if anybody else had wasted time on this. Testing is of course based on my ability to locate the %&#@%#! remote temperature sensor buried somewhere in my garage. Pending that find I'll drop the sensor into the stock box before and after the element to see what it reports. Then I'll move upstream to the general location of the Engstrom OptiFlow intake setup (which I am currently resisting the urge to buy)...
Secondly, even with the degraded performance introduced through warmer air induction, does this truly surpass the ability to pull a greater volume of air more rapidly into the intake? Since a cone setup can allow upwards of 50% increased flow depending on the application, I wondered if anybody had researched this (other than SOP feel)?
I readily comprehend the warmer air issue (albeit sans turbocharging as a consideration) so please don't flame me on that point, but I did wonder about those points.
Any feedback/input appreciated!
