My wife and I have owned a 1968 Corvette since 1985. We also owned a 1986 900S for nine yrs long ago. Back in the '80s we would regularly wave & get waves when seeing another Vette or C900; it was just a part of driving for us. We'd laugh when, occasionally we'd wave at a Saab and get no response; then remember we're driving the Vette... it got confusing!
Anyway, these days I'd say only 25% of Vette drivers wave to us when we're cruising in the '68 and most of those that do are driving older Vettes. We now drive a 2000 Viggen and in the 4 months we've owned it I got an enthusiastic wave only once, othewise nothing. I agree it seems the bulk of true friendly enthusiasts are driving old iron (or old glass).
