dampening resulting in that "rattle your molars" feel. Have 'em on my '86 9000 and you feel EVERY ripple in the pavement. Very precise though and as close to zero body roll as you can get. I know newer models have tamed down a bit. I think they're suffering from a bad rap from previous years.
They migrated into the street market from off-road racing where you naturally want lots of compression dampening. I imagine it was a bit hard for Biltsein engineers to "wimp out" a more comfortable ride for non-racing applications. Funny to see them on every other truck and SUV cruising the cities. Overall a really great product. My set has over a hundred thousand miles and are just as tight as the day they were installed!
