I've driven both my '90 C900 NA & '99 9-3 LPT from Denver to Phoenix. Both during the summer. (Yeah, some folks just don't learn.) For the C900, the lower altitude made an amazing difference in the engine's performance despite a 30*F increase in ambient temp (from 90*F to 120*F). It was like having a 6cyl instead of the 4cyl I was used to. Cooling wasn't a problem for me, but my wife felt it could've been better. It didn't take long to learn to crack the windows & turn the steering wheel 180* upside-down whenever we left the car in the sun.
For the 9-3 I noticed no change in performance. Cooling was noticeably improved over the C900 (no complaints from any of the "Automatic Climate Controllers" in the car), but I would expect that. (If you look at my '90's AC plumbing, it definitely looks like an afterthought.) As far as comparing an '03 to something 4yrs-5yrs old, I can also tell you that dramatic quickness improvements were made after my '99. I'm sure most of it's due to T5 vs T7 changes, but driving an '02 for a day really surprised me. Simply amazing performance changes. I wouldn't expect any negatives due to geographic location.
