The clutch makes a heavy clunking sound. If the mast is broken its a lighter clicking sound. What usually breaks is a long plastic gear-rack thing which pushes the mast up & down. Looks kind of like a plastic wire-tie. Its part of the mast, so you need a new one.
Take off the nut outside the fender. Turn on the radio; when it begins to rise, grab it & pull all the way out. If you're lucky you can also grab the broken end of the plastic rack & pull that out, too. Compare against the length of the new one to be sure that you have it all. If not, you get to dismantle the motor/gearbox & retrieve the rest of it.
Oh yeah... as you take it out, note which way the teeth face on that rack. Put in the new mast with the teeth facing the proper way. Turn off the radio so the motor sucks in the new mast, then put the nut back on. Up & down again so it parks itself all the way in.
