Don,
I bought mine brand new off the lot - 5-door, black in/out, included one option, heated seats, and the seats are the best I've EVER sat in.
I bought this car after 4 years with a 1998 900SE coupe - loved the turbo in that car so much that after I had a taste of the Viggen I had to have one. So far (17K miles) the car has had no major issues though I do have some complaints about cheap interior plasticky parts falling off or apart, but all has been fixed (or will be fixed) under warranty. The car is as fast as it needs to be for public streets and highways, IMO, though I can envision going for an ECU upgrade once the payments are done. This is the first real performance car I've ever owned or driven and there are times when the extra stiff suspension can be bone-jarring, but you get used to it. If that seems problematic for you also consider the Aero, though I think the Viggen's looks beat the Aero hands down.
There's a big GM-stamped rubber donut holding the steering rack in place and it really does allow things to move around too much for a FWD car with the amount of torque the Viggen offers. This is the only serious upgrade I've done (it was a knock-off of the Viggen Rescue Kit Steering Rack Clamp & Brace - look for KIC Innovations on the performance board) though I've also added a K&N air filter. The steering clamp upgrade does make a big difference in steering quickness and precision, but the car was no less fun without it. It does seem to reduce some of the front-end "wandering" under full boost in 1st and 2nd gears. As far as keeping the power to the road, your options are limited depending on how much you want to spend - I've heard of someone on the performance board installing a limited slip-differential. The car is not a fast launcher because of the FWD characteristics, but wheel-spin can be mostly controlled with finesse. I'll be replacing the stock P6000's soon with some better tires, probably S03's since that seems to be the consensus winner around here. The car really moves from 3rd gear and up when torque is no longer electronically limited.
The enormous amount of torque available at relatively low RPMs make this car a total blast to drive. As most reviews complain, there is "torque" steer, and requires the driver to be a little more attentive when doing fast launches, etc, basically use both hands to steer. If you've driven a Viggen then you know what it's about, if not, do so.
