The water cooling of the turbo dissipates heat away from the hot turbo to keep it from boiling the oil. Saab has used water cooled turbos since 1988. The second reason is newer synthetic oil stand up to the heat much better oil from years ago. My advice would be to keep out of the boost when you're within a mile or two of your house. And, of course, don't rev the engine right before you shut it down. I got over 200k out of the original turbo on my '87spg before having to rebuild it..and it wasn't watercooled. Strict oil change intervals are probably more important to turbo lifespan than anything else. I won't start the debate on what mileage a proper oil change interval is!
